How to win and how to set up

How to win

Reduce your opponent's life from 20 to 0. Some cards let you win a different way.

Before playing

1

Choose a format

Deck size, legal cards, and starting life totals depend on the format.

2

Prepare your deck

Shuffle and draw seven cards. If your hand doesn't work for you, you can change it with a mulligan.

3

Note your life total

In a normal game you start with 20 life. In Commander you start with 40.

Tip: you don't need to memorize everything. Read a lesson, try what it explains, and come back when you have a question.
